Gestalt therapy is based on a holistic philosophy of life and practice, and the belief that human beings potentially have all the necessary abilities to solve their own problems and face their own difficulties. However sometimes people get stuck or “fixed” in patterns and beliefs and need assistance. Gestalt Therapy provides this support to individuals and couples as they investigate and uncover how these patterns and beliefs impact on their present life.
The Gestalt approach to therapy emphasizes awareness. It is a process in which the client learns the method of awareness, and in developing this capacity for awareness, is better able to make sense of his or her life and not just settle for explanations about it. The client learns that perceptions, feelings and actions often provide more valuable insight into core issues than explanations and interpretations.
The client is an integral part of the process of experience and discovery and is not there simply to listen to the re-interpretations of the therapist. Emphasis is placed on doing, thinking, and feeling in the moment rather than on what might be, should be, or could be. Self-acceptance and change can take place at any moment in this process.
What's in it for you? Through awakening your awareness, you become better able to make choices in your life that reflect what you really want and mobilize yourself to action. In the process, you develop the skills and the tools necessary to deal with challenges as they arise. In short, you are better able to get on with your life.
Sessions for individuals last 55 minutes and take place weekly, bi-weekly or as the need arises. Therapy sessions for couples last 1.5 hours. I am also available to work with groups on particular topics or themes on an ongoing basis.
